Lou built a resistance cable system in his basement and while not pretty is a great use of space and gave me the idea to incorporate something like it into the home. My version would have a centralized weight stack (could be located between studs or in a cabinet) and from this stack cables would run throughout the house (probably limited to one floor). Each cable would terminate in an 'outlet' that could be used to attach a bar for an exercise. Further thought led to thinking about each outlet as a light fixture, probably LED. Imagine a recessed LED fixture in your home that could also function as a Lat pulldown station or a small fixture in the wall that could be used as an upright rowing station. In this way, the entire home could be a useful gym of sorts. Here are a few sketches (now I need to find a friend with a building that has an unfinished interior like a garage so that we can build a prototype):
I’ve designed a few projects around this theme and my approach to “fitness architecture” is unconventional from that of both perspectives, however, I believe that this kind of thinking can be of great benefit to those seeking greater options for fitness in their lives.
Here are a few examples of how your environment can have a positive impact on your fitness:

Context
Taking cues from the world you live in
Top fitness begins with a good understanding of one’s context. Simply put, ‘what are your fitness options?’ I’ve mapped my options for the last three places I’ve lived. It has helped me to think of my context as a campus of training opportunities. To do this, I start with the obvious amenities such as health clubs, yoga studios, martial arts clubs and so on. Some of these I may never use but it’s nice to know that they are available to me.
Next, I map the less obvious, such as parks with running or biking trails, football fields with running tracks and bleachers, open water (and indoor pools) areas that could be used for swimming, paddling or kayaking. Additionally, I create my own running and riding routes of different distances. I find the steepest hills for resistance training, playgrounds with jungle gyms, open spaces for boot camp style workouts, beaches for running in sand. My only limitation is my imagination. At the end of this exercise, I have a map of my neighborhood that shows a myriad of exercise options.
This analysis has led to some interesting results. For example, I discovered that I could kayak from my house to the grocery store instead of drive. I also completed a Swim-Run workout by swimming to Marblehead (from the end of Derby pier in Salem) and running back. Last winter I created five specific terrain workouts that I did with my friends and we had a blast working out on the beach, the playground, on the bleachers, and on a steep grassy hill at Lynch Park. Each Terrain Workout was different and inspired by the context in which we live. If you look at your world in this way, you too will find that your context will call you to play.

Organization “Circuits”
Optimal organization for fast transitions

Once we’ve identified all of the great fitness opportunities available to us outside of the home (or office) we need to get organized in our homes. “Circuits” are a pathway to organize our equipment so that we can spend more time doing and less time preparing.
To get started, I break my prep into a series of steps and create a pathway in my home along which I organize my gear. Each sport or activity may have a different circuit and some circuits will overlap. Running for example is a pretty simple circuit (since there’s not a lot of equipment involved). My run circuit consists of three storage areas. First, my clothing storage and changing area is for workout clothing only and in a place (my living room) where I can quickly change to run. I have a built in weather station here that allows me to dress appropriately for outside temperatures. Next, in the kitchen, I have a sport nutrition cabinet that holds all of my water bottles, my fuel belt, and supplements that may be required for a long run or ride. My last stop is my ‘electronics’ area where I keep my iPod, and heart rate monitor (and phone) – also a charging station. If I owned a GPS or power meter device I would keep it here too. I follow this pathway out (and back in) to be efficient when transitioning to run.
By organizing my home in this way I’ve aided my ability to transition quickly to activity, thus spending more time in motion.

Triggers and Spatial Requirements
Incorporating exercise into our everyday life – seamlessly

We can easily bring exercise into the home by matching the spatial requirements of specific exercises with their appropriate places in the home. A few weeks ago I took a big tumble on my skate board. As I was hitting the pavement, I literally had the thought, ‘I need to develop more upper body strength!’ And so I began to incorporate pushups into my every day routine. In the space of my kitchen, I do two sets of pushups daily. The first is to warm up, a slow set and sometimes from my knees. The second set, immediately following, is to fail (as many as I can). In the first three weeks, I tripled my strength and reminded myself (yet again) that we can increase strength (and flexibility) with relatively little time.
Another great anecdote for incorporating exercise into our daily routine occurred to me on a recent visit to a client’s home. I noticed a pull-up bar in the foyer hallway and we began discussing how the entire family uses it. The previous year, their oldest son took a standard fitness test at his school. By all standards he is a fit kid, in fact, he’s a black belt in Karate, but at the time he could only do one pull-up. Being a bit embar¬rassed by this, he convinced his parents to buy a pull up bar. “He can’t walk by it without doing a pull up,” they told me. After a year of doing pull-ups “he completed 11 pull-ups, the most pull-ups of his class, and was the only 5th grader to go all the way up the pegboard, across the top and back down the other side.” Now the whole family uses the bar and benefits from its placement in the home. Because of its location and visibility the bar became an integral part of the family’s day to day routine and all of this increased strength came from one very simple intervention.
The stand-up workstation is another great example of how we can modify our environments to improve our well-being. Standing up at times when you might normally be sitting for long periods is becoming more en vogue. I’ve been standing while at work for a long time now and I’m a huge believer in the benefits of getting up off your…well, chair. But don’t take my word for it, do a quick Google search on "standing up while working.” You’ll see quickly what I mean. You too will want to free your gluts and hamstrings form the atrophy of being crushed all day long, every day, for years on end. These ‘exercise’ examples have real spatial requirements that we can use to incorporate into our homes (i.e. fit them in like a puzzle piece). So, for example, my kitchen has a nice open floor area for pushups, I’ve installed a pull up bar in my office and of course, do much of my work standing (with a raised desk).
Each of these elements and spaces are triggers for these specific exercises and I’m now in the habit of using them frequently, without much forethought.

Display Your Sport
A solution for both storage and a little inspiration

One last example of modifying our environments to make us fitter is really more of a practical solution for providing storage but can provide a little inspiration as well. As an architect, I commonly hear the same complaints from my clients with regards to storage, namely that ‘we just don’t have enough.’
The image below illustrates how our sport can be an artful and decorative addition to our home. In this case, a Kayaker hangs his boats in a vaulted ceiling space. The paddles are arranged vertically on the wall and a PFD is displayed as sculpture. In my house, I display my bicycles on a special frame designed with lighting that illuminates the bikes in an artistic way and projects their silhouette onto the adjoining walls. It’s visually appealing and solves a huge storage dilemma. Having the bikes in view also inspires me to ride, even if it’s on the trainer in winter time.

I hope that these ideas will inspire you to take a look at your environment and rethink your own fitness opportunities. I believe that fitness and FitSpace is always a ‘work in progress’ and requires evolution to remain meaningful and sustaining.

Ok, I'm particularly proud of this project. Not because it's any great feat of engineering or high design. It's a simple project that took me a few hours to bang out, but has already expanded my big day or 'small epics.' The idea is simple; a comfortable bed for the car with decent ventilation and a bit of privacy. The bunk can be broken down and stored in the trunk (or way back) and includes a reading light, small fan, some window screens and, of course, the bunk itself. Not a lot of space, sleeping on it reminds me of my 'Capsule Hotel' experience in Fukuoka, Japan. All good, no adventure should be complete without one:

Over night for a two day intro to paragliding (flying solo).

Over night for an early morning trail start to climb Mt. Washington.

Midnight hike with Tucker under full moon along Granite Ledges trail in White Mountains followed by a climb to top of Mt. Adams after a few hours of sleep on the bunk.

Most recently, Tucker and I completed hike to North Baldface after arriving to the trailhead around midnight (and snowing) on Easter Sunday (after dinner with family).

I think of FitSpace as a mentality insofar as design (a little forethought) can help us navigate our everyday world. Fitness too is a mental construct; if I think of myself as 'fit' I'm more likely to make healthier choices all the way around from the dinner table to how I choose to work (standing or seated). The 'design' aspect of fitness, or the forethought that creates the fit environment such as a stand up workstation, can extend into the most unlikely places.

The small epic is something that I started last year. Typically it's a 24 hour period. For example, I'm just coming off of one. Mine started as the festivities of Easter Sunday were winding down. I was pretty well ready to go with gear packed once we got home from dinner with family. After a quick turnaround I was out the door (with Tucker) by about 9. We drove for three hours up to the Whites (45 min north of Conway), arriving to a trailhead a bit after midnight. It was raining, cold and very dark. But also quiet, alas! I quickly installed my car bunk and curled up in a comfortable bed until morning. During the night, rain had turned to snow, a wet, slushy snow. It felt good to lounge a bit waiting for a little extra light and warmth that never really came. So, up at 7 and on the trail by 8.

The first few hours of my hike to North Baldface were pretty miserable. The rain persisted, it was cold and I was wet from both sweat and rain. We were 'in the clouds' and the water seemed to permeate my spirits. The snow was slushy too like quick sand and I was lucky to be moving a mile an hour. It dawned on me that there's a big difference between misery and pain. I was miserable but not in pain, and things could only get better. Fortunately they did.

It took us about 5 pokey hours to go about 6.5 miles and up 2500 feet in the wet slushy snow. Above tree line there was no discernable trail to follow (occasional hints). In addition, the weather stayed pretty socked in until mid afternoon making navigation a little tough (and yes I did go about a mile out of my way). But ultimately, the day turned gorgeous.

I've always believed that fitness should be fun and therefore something that we WANT to do every day. Fitness should also be challenging. Sure, we can add races to our schedule (by design) that will challenge us, make us better, stronger, and faster but I wonder if Fitness then becomes a byproduct. Perhaps. For me, I think that might be half the story. Racing is a great goal and motivator and I've got a few on my up coming schedule that have been driving me to train harder. But races come and go, and I'd like to think of my fitness at least as a constant (with ebbs and flows of course). For me the 'small epic' is a tremendous test of fitness and an incredible fitness booster. It typically leaves me wrecked for days and that is the point.

I'm a huge fan of skateboard riding. When my dog was still a puppy I trained him to get comfortable out front and encouraged him to pull. Now, he's a pulling machine and our favorite mode of getting around town together is by long board.

I love the idea of the skateboard as an aesthetic element in my home. I only have one board (my go to) but can imagine a few different boards of style and color hanging neatly on a wall and ready for use. The picture above is borrowed from Boosted Boards, a cool new development electric assist vehicles. I can't wait to get mine. I'll be sure to include an outlet for recharging on my 'board display wall.'Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3682935794380676612.post-72697042492071595072012-11-19T12:18:00.002-05:002012-11-19T12:18:24.615-05:00Terrain Fitness = FitSpace

We've started a series of Sunday morning workouts in my neighborhood. With 2 down and 3 to go, we're picking up momentum. I expect to have a dozen athletes for our next workout on Dec 3rd.

The premise behind Terrain Fitness is to site each workout in a unique location and to design each workout for that specific location. In this way, the local topography or Terrain will dictate the work to be done. Each workout focuses on a warmup, base strength, strength building and agility. I'm also slowly starting to introduce mindfulness and meditation (for holistic fitness). So far, these workouts have been great fun! I remember the days of being a kid again and going outside to play with the neighborhood kids...

The pond receives runoff water from an inlet. At the other end of the pond there is a 'fast water field' for kayaking whitewater. Short duration water releases create whitewater obstacles for a challenging paddle. The obstacles (large PVC gates) can be removed or relocated to change the course of the water. After a short duration release the damn is closed and the water is recirculated (pumped) back into the pond (from the collection pool). The kayaker can paddle about the collection pool while waiting for the next release.
Between us, Robin and I have six bikes (although one's for sale). The mountain bikes are in the basement but the beautiful road machines are on display here in the corner of our living room. The column is built to the specs of each 'steed' and spot lights project flattened 'images' of the front and rear wheels onto our living room walls. It's quite spectacular. I'm playing with the idea of having the wheels rotate slowly with a small motor attached to each wheel but am thinking that it may be too psychedelic...
Its a beautiful spot with a remote stretch of beach where you'll hardly see another soul since access to the beach requires a 3 1/2 mile hike across the dunes (stunning walk). Once we reached the beach we decided to play a game I call the 'box.'

A square is created in the sand with each side about 25' long. Two players start standing at opposite corners. One player attempts to run to another corner without being tagged. If the runner can make it to the opposite corner s/he gets two points. Its a great game of lateral movement and in the sand creates quite a workout. I also love what it does to the landscape, in this case a distant 'square' in the sand on the horizon. We didn't stay long enough to watch the tide erase our work.

Any space can be a FitSpace as long as your surroundings contribute to your body's need to move. There's nothing worse than sitting at a desk all day (think 'atrophy'). To combat desk-sitting-atrophy I decided to put together a coffee mug with some stretching and strengthening exercises. Things to do whilst you wait for your doc to save or email to load. You might pick three or a column and do a 10 minute workout from your desk. The first column for example would be a great way to get through the afternoon dulldrums...

The mug has shipped and I'll load a pic of the finished product when it arrives...Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3682935794380676612.post-43133421935476242672011-10-03T11:50:00.000-04:002011-10-03T11:50:22.797-04:00Inspiring presentation YESS lecture series at Salem YMCAMy Friend Jim Logan gave a great talk last week at the Salem YMCA. His topic was something that resonated with me and I've been giving it a lot of thought especially in how it relates to FitSpace and fitness.

Jim started off with a brief summary of human physiology and how it relates to movement. The title of his talk was 'Primal Conditioning.' He gave some great examples of groups that have embraced this concept as a conditioning methodology. Groups like the Monkey Bar Gym, Primal Fitness, The Strength Box, MovNat, Wild Fitness, Parquour. Check out this link and try not to be inspired:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyTgnGBlNTA

Jim asked me to provide the next talk in the YESS series with focus on FitSpace. The talk will be in December at the Salem YMCA.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3682935794380676612.post-61794736394237471622011-07-28T10:40:00.003-04:002011-08-03T21:28:07.605-04:00Sport TagsI recently forgot my helmet on a group ride up in the White Mountains. Fortunately for me there was a bike shop across the street from were we started our ride. Forty dollars later, I was able to begin my ride clad with a new, over sized ATB helmet complete with visor (which I removed).

Seems like I've been forgetting a lot of stuff lately. Last week you may have found me rummaging through the YMCA lost and found for a dry TShirt. I've packed these bags a thousand times and how I continue to miss stuff is beyond me...really.

So, learning from my mistake(s), I've created these sport tags (luggage tags) for the bags I use for my workouts. I figure having a simple checklist can't hurt when my mind is clearly elsewhere. And in the event that a bag gets lost, my name and number may help direct it's way home.
That is to say, the key program objectives are to facilitate activity and to foster a lifestyle that promotes health and wellness. This FitSpace program is protected from many aspects that threaten our ability to be active, such as an isolation from recreational space, dependency on the car, lack of community serving infrastructure. In this case, each home (box car) is a connector of street and park. One enters the front of the home from the car or the back of the home on the bike (or foot). The pathways shared within each community connects to a larger network of bikeways, aka rail trail, which makes bicycle commuting viable citywide.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3682935794380676612.post-28686952895516422332011-06-28T10:29:00.005-04:002011-07-05T13:19:51.640-04:00FitSpace Companion

Robin and I recently added a new member to our family, Tucker, an Australian Shepard puppy. And let me tell you, he's pretty cool.

My concept of FitSpace embodies more than a physical place, rather it's a mentality that can be applied to many aspects of living. Anything that gets you up and moving, outside and into sunlight:) as a solution to a problem that normally would keep you in is a good example of the FitSpace mentality. In this way, Tucker embodies FitSpace completely.

I've never been a person who enjoys walks. I recognize this as a tremendous personality flaw, believe me. I wish that the thought of walking made me leap out of bed in the morning. The truth is, I'd rather sleep. Tucker, however, changes that. He's an excuse, a reason to walk and it's been great. When I'd normally cram in lunch at my desk or sitting in front of the noon news, I find myself now packing a small lunch and getting out. We'll go to the park and hang. Or sometimes we'll find a trail to run. All simple stuff but really fantastic.

Since we've had Tucker, we've meet more people in a month than in the two years we've lived in Salem. Tucker is like a key that unlocks the friendliness hidden in the crunchy, hard shell that is the typical New Englander. A short month after our first walks to local neighborhood parks we now hear 'Tucker!' like cat calls at nearly every street corner. And we've met dozens of doggie denizens from the area, like a secret society that non-dog owners would be unaware existed...as I was a short month ago.

I've realized that Robin is a far better people person than I. Robin has embraced the whole dog culture far faster and with less effort. When we hear 'Tucker!' she'll reply in kind, "Sam" or "Lucy." I'm generally left in the dust, 'and you are?' I think of myself as a compassionate person, caring and thoughtful. But that doesn't always mean I've got skills (or patience). Don't worry though, Tucker is teaching me.

I had dogs when I was a kid so I therefore have a little experience with dogs. The dogs of my childhood were just that, dogs. They weren't little people or precious. They lived outside in their own house and had free reign of our large back yard (most of the time). They were not well trained or very well behaved for that matter. But they were always part of our family; playful companions. The thing is, as I remember the best part of my time with 'Star' or 'Bear,' I remember being active, throwing the ball or frisbee, playing tag, hiking, and so on. Dogs just seem to embody action.

Tucker has big paws for a puppy. You know what they say, 'big paws, big (you know what).' Folks always want to know how big he's going to get. "About 55 pounds, or just big enough to pull me on my skis." It's true, I've got big expectations for this little guy. But for now we're taking it one day at a time OR in Tucker terms, one scoop of food after the other.

Rooms are organized along an interior runway or 'FitSpace performance deck.' The house uses a series of outdoor or semi-outdoor rooms which includes a deck with outdoor fireplace (multipurpose space), outdoor performance deck to mimic indoor hall and an outside tub as an extension of the bath.
FitSpace 'circuits' are used to organize spatial sequences and points of entry. For example, returning from a run, one enters through the 'mudroom' bath. Used clothing is recycled before a shower. The bath also is a lounge with a small wetbar for recovery. And, of course, the soaking tub completes the axis.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3682935794380676612.post-46123441413811913282011-06-09T13:50:00.002-04:002011-06-09T13:51:50.954-04:00FitSpace CabinThe interior climbing wall
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioHwrYsZVtqUWfFJxjcg1RQatPzKmol2UY_ous7Fk7CB8o5ptkX93u8kkSh4hiOHy5q9t6xHlvtUJ8ktA18R4VgaHr1VRhPrCUzvWEkdh6H6UP1X5Q160Pt2IFKzJ09lzKIzH0t-0Lrkc3/s400/090428FitSpaceCabin02-Model2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5616279102035214082" />Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
