The Deca Ironman is from my perspective the toughest race on the planet. As it's name suggests, it starts with a 24 mile swim, is followed by 1120 miles on the bike and finishes with 262 miles of running. The Deca-Ironman is Ironman times 10, non-stop, no-kidding.
What's interesting to me about the race is that its on a loop course that's a little over a mile long with a pool swim. Imagine swimming for 15 hours and then starting your first lap of over a thousand. The short course allows for constant support and monitoring of the athletes at all times. I read an account of an athlete taking around 10 days to finish and several years to recover (truly Ironman x 10).
I began to think about all that could be accomplished in or on a 1 mile loop track. This is the basis for the master plan of my FitSpace community to the right. The track around the perimeter of the 1500' square plot is approximately one mile. Within the property there are several smaller plots with FitSpace homes. Notice that the path intersects the roadway in one place and yes bikes and runners would have the right of way!
Ideally, this community would be connected to a larger network of running paths, good cycling, off road trails, and maybe even a great community fitness club. However this model redefines the typical housing development and cul-de-sac. Through shared community resources (land) five homes can create a safe and active environment.
The path itself has variations and topo which would allow for a mixed experience on each lap. There could be a paved path in addition to a wooded trail that intertwine. The center of the property has a small pond which could be utilized for paddling, swimming or skating (winter). Since 5 active families control the destiny and usage of the resources, the possibilities are endless.
