FitSpace

Ultimately, as an architect, I'd like to be designing spaces that challenge the way we think about our living environment. FitSpaces engage our imagination and our bodies in ways that our current homes may not.
I recently came across the photo album of Joe Valesko from ZPacks. Joe is a veteran through hiker and has spent many contiguous months hiking on the AT and PCT.

These few pictures capture several aspects of FitSpace design. The first is a reinterpretation of space. The living room is sunken and there is a large fireplace with climbing wall. In this first pic, there is a climber, roped up, 'hanging out' on the sofa drinking a beer. His belayer is laying on the floor behind him.

This second shot shows how the rest of the space is focused on the climbing wall. Not only is the wall completely functional, it is the main entertainment feature in the house.

A second aspect of FitSpace design that this space captures is the consideration of surfaces and how the design of surfaces (climbing wall) can lead to the overall aesthetic appeal of a room. In this case the climbing wall is uniquely 'textured' with handholds and rubber.
